DIY Yarn Gifts for Kids

A few years ago, I shared this idea for making yarn bombs when wrapping gift cards––and it's one of my most visited posts! So, I thought I would dust off this idea and show you how to make DIY yarn gifts for kids this Valentine's Day.

These yarn gifts are super easy to make and they are so much fun for little ones to open. It will put a big smile of everyone's face as they unwrap (and unwrap some more) to discover what's inside!

You can wrap up any small item you want to give. It could be a small toy, a gift card, even money! I've used this method in giving so many different gifts, the possibilites are really endless.

I decided to make this yarn gifts little surprise Valentine's Day gifts for the kiddos in my life. I picked up some small items at the Target dollar spot and also at the Dollar Tree.

Supplies You Need to Make Yarn Gifts

You probably have all the supplies you need to make these yarn gifts for kids. In addition to the small toys, I used:

  • Yarn I had on-hand (I like to use blanket yarn because it's thicker and softer)
  • Scissors
  • A round punch (to make a tag that says "pull")
  • A hole punch
  • Sharpies
  • Felt poms to attach for a little more jazz (optional)

All you do is begin wrapping your yarn around the toy, small gift, or money making it into a ball as you go. There's no wrong way to do this! Just wrap and wrap (and wrap) until you have the desired shape and size yarn bomb you want.

Once you have your desired size yarn bomb, cut the yarn leaving about 6" extra. Then, you can wrap in a pom and attach your tag that says "pull."

I love making these for all holidays and it's by far my favorite way to wrap a gift card!
