Thinking about creating some homemade holiday ornaments? DIY ornaments really can be simple and these DIY plaid ornaments are proof. I love the ecofriendly factor, turn something old into something new.
Simple holiday decorations are my favorite. Like decorating with cranberries or decorating with wrapping paper. Creating pretty holiday touches doesn't have to be expensive or time consuming!
Turn Old Flannels Into Plaid Ornaments
To make these plaid ornaments you're going to need to collect a couple variations of old plaid fabric. This can old flannels, plaid blankets, or just scraps of plaid fabric. Since my favorite part of this DIY is turning something old into something new, I suggest going to your local thrift store or second hand store and seeing what plaid you can find there.
Supplies You'll Need For This Project
- Styrofoam balls in a variety of sizes
- Old plaid fabric in a couple different colors and patterns
- Scissors
- Straight pins
- Ribbon or twine (optional if you'd like to hand them)
You'll start by cutting your plaid fabric into strips about 1-2" wide. Pin the strip to a styrofoam ball. Then, you'll wrap these strips around styrofoam balls in a criss-crossing pattern until you can no longer see the styrofoam. Once done, Pin the fabric in place to secure it.
This is what they'll look like when they're done!
I love the cozy and warm look of these plaid ornaments! You can hot glue a piece of ribbon or twine to make these functionable to hang. Or (like shown above), you can use them to fill a bowl or vase for instant holiday decor.

I just love plaid, and really love to mix all different plaids. I usually just use my twig trees at Christmas, but this year I used them to decorate a winter plaid birthday party. Each tree had garland made from a different plaid. I ripped them so the edges were rough, went well with the twig trees. Now I am going to add little plaid balls to them. Thanks.
