While I'm no stranger to bourbon cocktails (my go-to is a Kentucky Mule followed closely by a Blackberry Bourbon Smash), I don't have a lot of experience creating bourbon drinks that are meant to be sipped–slowly. Until, this brown sugar bourbon cocktail.
After failing during the holidays to properly make myself (and savor) a Manhattan (let's just say it was basically just bourbon, and a lot of it . . . that I "drank" not "sipped" ooops), I learned my lesson and realized I needed to do a little research and development.
I decided to craft a new recipe to enjoy that I think you'll like too. This Brown Sugar Bourbon Cocktail is well balanced and delicious. Don't be afraid–go ahead and try it!

You can serve this recipe with ice (on the rocks) or without (neat). I prefer my cocktails on the rocks and love using a single large ice cube tray from Amazon.
Ingredients for a Brown Sugar Bourbon Cocktail
You only need a few ingredients for this cocktail but it does require a little prep to make the brown sugar simple syrup.
- Ice
- Bourbon
- Orange
- Brown sugar simple syrup (see recipe below)
- Fresh Mint
Tips for Serving This Cocktail
This cocktail is also best served using freshly squeezed orange juice. Since you don't need a lot of it, it's not that big of a chore to make your own (it's so worth it).
Also, I suggest rimming one portion of the rim of each glass with brown sugar. To get the sugar to stick to the rim, just dip it into syrup. It really steps up both the presentation and the taste.
Again, it's up to you if you'd like to serve it with or without ice. I happen to like my drinks chilled so I opt for ice.
